Equestria is a fictional world in the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, owned by the American toy company Hasbro.
Basic lore
Equestria is a magical alien continent inhabited and ruled mainly by ponies. There are also many other races living on this continent.
In the narrow sense, Equestria refers to the Equestria mainland, which is directly ruled by the royal sisters, Celestia and Luna, and implements an autocratic monarchy.
The two royal sisters were responsible for the rising and setting of the sun and moon and for the safety of their people. The earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns live freely under the rule and protection of day and night. The national boundaries between other countries and Equestria are not clear, citizens move very frequently, and trade and cultural communication are very open.
In a broad sense, Equestria refers to all countries/dimensions/different worlds that appear in the entire work, including the human world, the Crystal Empire, and the magically modified Equestria in other fan works.

Equestria
Ponyville
Located at the foot of the mountain in the center of the capital city. The home of the six Elements of Harmony, most of its main story takes place in Ponyville. It has basic living facilities such as schools, hospitals, and markets. The environment is quiet, suitable for elderly care. Twilight's Friendship Castle and school are roughly in the north of the town, Fluttershy's cabin is at the junction of the town and the Everfree Forest, Sweet Apple Acres is on the outskirts of the town, and Sugar Cube Dessert House and Carousel Boutique are in the center of the town. Rainbow Dash's cloud house has no exact location.
Canterlot
A large palace complex built on the mountainside. The main colors are yellow and purple. It is one of the administrative capitals and cultural centers of Equestria and the residence of the royal sisters. Below the palace are numerous museums, libraries, noble residences, large hotels and private residences. Celebrities and political elites live here. It was destroyed by the trio of villains in the final battle and later expanded and rebuilt.
Manehattan
Located in the easternmost part of Equestria. It is the most economically developed region and the most technologically advanced city in the country of Equestria. There is a statue of a free pony near the ocean. It is based on Manhattan Island, New York, USA. The situation in Manehattan is rarely mentioned in the main series, but it is the place where many fan stories take place. Rarity has a fashion store in Manehattan. After S7, Rarity mainly manages the fashion stores in Manehattan and Canterlot.
Cloudsdale
The city of Pegasus. Under normal circumstances only pegasi and alicorns can stand on the clouds. Earth ponies or unicorns cast with the cloud walk or butterfly wing spell can also walk on clouds. Because unicorns and earth ponies cannot enter Cloudsdale, the development level of business and tourism is low (only mages who specialize in magic can release cloud walking skills, so the cost of developing tourism is very high; the pegasi's talent is generally weather control or fight, few engage in commodity exchange). The Cloudsdale government mainly relies on income from the weather industry and performance teams, so it doesn't have much money. Cloudsdale has the largest weather factory, so the Pegasus who live in Cloudsdale usually work in the weather factory. The annual flight competition is held in Cloudsdale.
Appleloosa
Appleloosa mainly develops agricultural and sideline industries. There is a bison settlement nearby, and Mane Six once went to Appleloosa to resolve a territorial dispute between ponies and bison. Appleloosa regularly holds rodeos, with the winner receiving a bonus. All in all, it's a very western town.
Everfree Forest
Everfree is located near Ponyville. A large group of legendary and terrifying creatures inhabit Everfree. Of course, there are also many precious plants and herbs in the Everfree Forest. The witch doctor Zecora lives in the Everfree Forest and provides herbal antidotes and tea to the pony residents of the town. The Princess's Old Castle and the Tree of Law are located in the center of Everfree.

Crystal Empire
Located in the northern part of the continent, most of its townspeople are crystal ponies, characterized by their bodies being translucent like crystal and reflecting dazzling light. It fell into a deep sleep due to the curse of King Sombra thousands of years ago. It was only recently that the curse was lifted and it appeared in the northern snowy mountains. After King Sombra was defeated, the rulers were replaced by Princess Cadance and Shining Armor.
History
If only the plot of the original animation was included, there would actually be a large gap in the history of Equestria. In terms of history, Hasbro only released information about the royal sisters when they first ascended the throne and when the country was founded. Nothing major happened in the thousand years between Nightmare Moon and S1. Therefore, most fanfics have filled in and modified this part of history to make it more consistent with the plot.
Before the founding of Equestria
Creation
Before the birth of Equestria, Hasbro, the Supreme Will, created three worlds (G1/G2/G3), but Hasbro was not satisfied with these three eras, so he sent the Lord God Lauren Faust to be responsible for the creation of the fourth world. The main god Lauren Faust collected the essence of the first three worlds and created Equestria. This is the original creation myth.
Ice Age
Equestria was not a republic of three races when it was first established. According to the Hearth's Warming Eve show, the three tribes of ponies each ruled a country before the two princesses came to power. The country of earth ponies developed agriculture and sells agricultural products, the country of pegasi developed the army and weather management, and the country of unicorns raised and lowered the sun and moon. As time went by, the conflicts between the three groups became more and more serious, eventually attracting the windigos who fed on hatred. When the resources of the former land were exhausted, the blizzard created by the windigos increased the crisis of the three tribes, so the three tribes decided to migrate at the same time. However, the final migration location of the three tribes was set at the same location. The leaders of the three tribes continued to argue in the new land, attracting the windigos from the old land, and sealed the three tribes in the cave filled with snowstorms outside. The leaders of the three tribes were even frozen into ice sculptures. Finally, the leaders' assistants woke up, lit the Fire of Friendship, and drove away the windigos. The three tribes have since merged into one country, which is now Equestria.
After the founding of Equestria
Discord
After the founding of Equestria, Discord once exercised dictatorial rule over Equestria by creating chaos and controlling minds. Although Hasbro did not systematically supplement that period of history and the situation at that time, it can still be seen from the side of Discord's ability. Sisters Celestia and Luna found the Elements of Harmony in Everfree, used them to defeat Discord and sealed him into a stone statue. After this, Celestia and Luna were both promoted to Alicorns, gaining immortality and powerful magic. The liberated pony residents elected Celestia and Luna as princesses and jointly governed Equestria.
History and Curse of the Crystal Empire
Shortly after the princess ascended the throne, King Sombra usurped his position as ruler of the Crystal Empire. After King Sombra came to power, he hid the Crystal Heart and imposed a brutal dictatorship on the Crystal Empire, and planned to form an army to attack Equestria. The two princesses learned of this and soon took the Elements of Harmony to defeat King Sombra and exiled him to the polar abyss. Before being exiled, King Sombra left a curse that caused the Crystal Empire to disappear for a thousand years, causing King Sombra to return together with the Crystal Empire at that time. After the return of the Crystal Empire, Twilight found the Crystal Heart and successfully defeated King Sombra. The Crystal Empire is currently governed by Cadence and Shining Armor.
Pony of Shadows
Thousands of years before the emergence of the Elements of Harmony, Star Swirl the Bearded led the five guardians of Equestria to perform duties similar to those of the Elements of Harmony, and the advantages they represented were almost the same as those of the Mane Six. And it is also a group of 2 earth ponies, 2 pegasi, and 2 unicorns. They represent strength (honesty), courage (loyalty), healing (kindness), beauty (generosity), hope (laughter), and magic (magic). In order to banish the fallen Pony fo Shadows, they imprisoned themselves and the Shadow Pony in a border prison. Nightmare Moon
After being promoted to Alicorns, the two princesses gained the ability to control celestial bodies. The elder sister Celestia controls the sun, and the younger sister Luna controls the moon. The neglected Luna was gradually swallowed up by jealousy and malice in her heart, and eventually degenerated into Nightmare Moon, who intended to plunge Equestria into eternal darkness. Nightmare Moon and Celestia had a decisive battle at the Old Castle, and Celestia used the Elements of Harmony to banish her to the moon for a thousand years. Twilight's era
Due to M6's outstanding contributions to all aspects of Equestria, the Royal Sisters announced their abdication in the first season of Season 9 and passed the throne to Twilight Sparkle. In the final episode, Twilight officially succeeds to the throne and moves into Canterlot. M6 establishes a Friendship Committee to jointly govern Equestria. Meetings are held monthly in Central City. The world's races are united. The Crystal Empire is ruled by the adult Flurry Heart. Equestria has truly entered the country. prosperous times.
