The kamaitachi (Japanese: 鎌鼬、かまいたち) is a Japanese legendary creature. Appearing in many ACGN works, it is also a moe point.

Introduction

The 'kamaitachi is one of the most common types of monsters in Japanese myths and legends, and is mainly popular in the Koshinetsu region.

The kamaitachi has sharp claws like sickles. It often appears accompanied by small whirlwinds and cuts humans with its claws at extremely fast speeds without the person being aware of it. According to a popular legend in Gifu Prefecture, three brotherly weasels will form a group. The first one will trip a human, the second one will cut the human being, and the third one will apply ointment on the wound so that the human will not notice the pain., and all this happened very quickly at the moment the whirlwind appeared.

The realistic prototype of the kamaitachi is actually a natural phenomenon in some areas of Japan. In rare cases, cyclones can cause human skin to crack due to pressure. The kamaitachi is a monster species born after this phenomenon has been artistically processed.

Kamaitachi is often regarded as the same species as Qiongqi in Japan . In the paintings of Toriyama Shiyan, Kamaitachi is even directly called Qiongqi. In fact, there are huge differences between Qiongqi, one of the four ancient evils in Chinese myths and legends, and kamaitachi.
